Man dies in jail awaiting trial for death of infant son found in freezer

A Georgia man was found dead in an Alabama jail where he was serving time in connection with his 6-month-old son who was found dead in a hotel freezer, a report said.

Carlton James Mathis, 30, was found unresponsive at about 10 p.m. Friday at Houston County jail in Dothan, Ala., and was later confirmed dead, according to AL.com.

Mathis was scheduled for trial in the death of his son, Curtis James Oakes.

The baby was found wrapped in towels, placed in a garbage bag and stuffed in a freezer in an Alabama hotel room.

Court records show the baby died after ingesting methamphetamine.

The child’s mother, Amanda Gail Oakes, pleaded guilty earlier this week to charges of manslaughter and corpse abuse.
