Some pleasure-seekers in the Bahamas enjoyed a silver lining to massively destructive Hurricane Dorian when their Disney cruise was extended for three days.
The Disney Dream was supposed to return to Port Canaveral on Monday after a four-day Caribbean jaunt, but the Category 4 storm shut down the Florida port and changed plans.
The ship instead sailed for Cozumel and the Cayman Islands — a safe distance from the storm — while Disney employees on Castaway Cay, a company-owned tropical island south of the hard-hit Abaco Islands, ducked into a shelter there and dodged Dorian’s worst.
“The forecast, given Castaway’s location, had always called for tropical force winds, not hurricane-force winds,” Kim Prunty, a spokesperson for Disney, told The Post on Monday. “Even so, we had them go into a shelter for a few hours. Now they’re kind of back on the island proper.”
For passengers, the cruise first extended the Dream trip until Wednesday, and later Thursday as the storm continued to threaten the Florida coastline.
Passengers were given the option to cut the trip short and return home, but many decided to stay on board at no extra cost, Prunty said.
Other cruise lines were also forced to juggle trips after major ports in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and Canaveral all closed to ship traffic over the weekend until Dorian passes.
Royal Caribbean extended cruises on three of its ships due to Dorian, according to USA Today.
The Allure of the Seas added stops in Honduras and Mexico, Harmony of the Seas added stops in Cozumel, and Symphony of the Seas skipped the Bahamas but added two more days of cruise time.
Norwegian Cruise Line said it is “assessing alternative options” for the Norwegian Sun, which was scheduled to return to Port Canaveral on Monday, the report said.
Carnival Cruise Line canceled one trip, delayed another and cut a third ship’s trip by two days.
