Colts sign QB Brian Hoyer after Andrew Luck’s retirement

The Indianapolis Colts now have two former Tom Brady backups.

In the wake of Andrew Luck’s shocking retirement, the Colts on Monday signed quarterback Brian Hoyer to a three-year, $12 million deal with $9 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports. Hoyer was released by the New England Patriots over the weekend as they decided to go with rookie fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham as their second quarterback.

Hoyer, 33, has appeared in 65 NFL games over the last 10 seasons, including 37 starts. His odyssey has included two trips through New England and swings through Arizona, Cleveland, Houston, Chicago and San Francisco.

He was most recently Brady’s backup, a role Jacoby Brissett filled in 2016 as a rookie before getting traded.

Brissett, 26, is now the Colts’ starter after Luck’s retirement. Hoyer gives the Colts an experienced backup as they try to pick up the pieces post-Luck and still try to make a push for the playoffs.
