Saveur hires Modern Farmer’s Sarah Gray Miller as chief

Bonnier Corp. has tapped an editor familiar with the travails of small startups to be the new editor of critically acclaimed but struggling food title Saveur.

Sarah Gray Miller, who was most recently heading Modern Farmer from 2015 to 2018, is the new editor-in-chief of Savuer.

She becomes the third editor-in-chief at the title since January 2018, replacing its most recent occupant, Stacy Adimando.

“This feels like a real homecoming to me,” said Miller. “I was fresh out of college when I assisted with the launch of Saveur and learned so much from the magazine’s founding editors. Their vision—of food as intrinsically linked to a people, a place a culture—is even more relevant today.”

In a varied career, Gray’s shown an adept ability to gain notice and win critical acclaim on thinly staffed titles. She was the launch editor of the since folded Budget Living, which won Ad Age’s launch of the year in 2003 and a National Magazine Award for General Excellence the following year.

She was tapped to run Modern Farmer in 2015 following the resignation of its founding editor Anne Marie Gardener and the walkout of its entire editorial staff. But she pulled off a stunning turnaround when Modern Farmer, which celebrated the farm fresh to table movement, won a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2017.

Adimando only held the position of editor-in-chief for the past six months, but the reality is she had been running the magazine since Adam Sachs resigned in January 2018. At that time the Swedish-owned parent company was in the midst of a major digital push and staff downsizing at its US operations, which publish Popular Science and Field & Stream. As part of that strategy, Saveur dropped from 10 print issues a year to quarterly.
