Weird But True

French’s creates mustard ice cream for National Mustard Day

It’s the latest hybrid nobody asked for.

America’s leading mustard brand, French’s, has collaborated with trendy California-based ice cream company Coolhaus to create mustard-flavored ice cream. The suspect sweet will be served up starting the week of Aug. 3, which is not coincidentally National Mustard Day.

“I scream, you scream, wait…mustard ice cream?” reads French’s homepage, which is hosted on parent company McCormick’s website.

New Yorkers can try the strange, limited-run concoction for free at Rockefeller Center and Columbus Circle Aug. 1, when Coolhaus ice cream trucks will be handing it out.

On Aug. 2, curious frozen treat fans can head over to Brooklyn Bridge Park and Williamsburg, and the next day the mustard ice cream truck will be scooping out its wares in East Hampton.

Angelenos can also give the sweet a try at Coolhaus’s Culver City, Calif., headquarters Aug. 2, 3 and 4, as well as Aug. 9-11.

For those not in LA or NYC, French’s has shared the recipe for the dessert on its website. The prep time is just five minutes, according to the instructions, and requires only a quarter cup of mustard.

If this offbeat treat is anything like the “Popeye the Sailor” spinach ice cream Van Leeuwen released for Fleet Week in May, makers will have prioritized sweetness and color over a pronounced mustard flavor.
