Coast Guard cutter drops off 13 tons of cocaine before heading home

The crew of a Coast Guard cutter finally made it home — but not before stopping in California to drop off the 13 tons of cocaine it recently seized.

That was the haul from the Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast’s mission to hunt down high-seas drug smugglers, including a dramatic, caught-on-video chase on July 18 during which traffickers were seen frantically hurling bales of coke overboard while fleeing the vessel.

Authorities later recovered 2,600 pounds of floating bales — one of five “interdictions” carried out by the crew.

The cutter dropped off its illicit cargo in San Diego on Friday before setting sail for its home port in Astoria, Oregon, according to Fox12 KPTV.

The crew arrived home Tuesday.

The Steadfast has patrolled international waters off the coasts of Mexico, Central America and South America since last June, the Coast Guard said.

The drugs offloaded in San Diego are worth an estimated $350 million, authorities said.
