Man fatally shot while riding bike in Queens

A 37-year-old man was gunned down while riding his bike in Queens Friday night, authorities said.

The victim, identified as Dwayne Smith, was on his way back home from the store at about 11:15 p.m. when he was shot multiple times on 229th St. near 144th Ave. in Brookville, police said.

Smith, the father of two children — a boy and a girl — was struck in the back, abdomen and arm, cops said.

He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

The male suspect fled and is still being sought, police sources said.

Police are still trying to determine the motive.

Neighbors on Saturday were distraught over the death of Smith, who they describe as a devoted family-man who enjoyed music and fixing up cars.

“It’s just a tough loss, man. Everyday he played music, all types of music, but mostly Jamaica music,” said a 42-year-old man who wouldn’t give his name.

Smith’s son, who neighbors said is about 10-years-old, was home at the time of the shooting, according to a neighbor who spoke to a witness.

“His son was inside the house,” said the 37-year-old neighbor. “He ran out when he heard the shots. He was begging to see his father one more time. He was pulling away from my friend and running towards his father on the sidewalk.”
