86-year-old fatally shot fellow senior at retirement community: authorities

An 86-year-old man allegedly shot and killed a fellow senior at their New Jersey retirement community, repeatedly blasting him in the back, officials said Tuesday.

A SWAT team raced to Leisure Village West retirement community in Manchester Township on Monday morning after Igal Hedad, 71, was found face down in the street, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hedad, originally from Florida, had bullet wounds in his back and was bleeding from the head, officials said.

There was also a bullet hole through the front door of the house he was found outside — and the home’s owner, Thomas Hatchett, was tracked down to another property he owns, in Verona, where he was arrested that night.

Hatchett was charged Monday night with murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and was held in Ocean County Jail, the prosecutor’s office said.

Manchester Township Police Chief Lisa Parker called it a “horrific crime” but offered no motive for the killing.
