Wizards preparing to make a run at Masai Ujiri

The Toronto Raptors are champions now, but they may want to lock up their top executive quickly.

The Washington Wizards are prepared to make a run at Masai Ujiri, Toronto’s president of basketball operations, league sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

According to the report, the deal for the 48-year-old Ujiri could approach $10 million annually and deliver him the opportunity for ownership equity.

The league sources also told the website that Wizards owner Ted Leonsis is going to reach out to the Raptors to make a formal request to interview Ujiri. Besides the lucrative financial deal, the offer would include running Washington’s basketball operations and perhaps have a key leadership role in the Monumental Sports and Entertainment company that overseas the Wizards and the NHL’s Capitals.

Ujiri has helped lead the Raptors to the playoffs in each of his six seasons with the team, so it’s safe to expect that Toronto will try to keep this top-notch executive.

Let the bidding begin.
