Trump threatens Cuba with ‘complete embargo’ over Venezuela

President Trump on Tuesday warned Cuba that he would slap the island nation with a “full and complete embargo” if its military didn’t stop supporting Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.

“If Cuban Troops and Militia do not immediately CEASE military and other operations for the purpose of causing death and destruction to the Constitution of Venezuela, a full and complete embargo, together with highest-level sanctions, will be placed on the island of Cuba,” Trump wrote, hours after Venezuela’s opposition leader, Juan Guaido, called for an uprising against Maduro.

“Hopefully, all Cuban soldiers will promptly and peacefully return to their island!” added Trump, whose administration strongly backs Guaido.

Hours earlier, Cuba president and Maduro backer Miguel Diaz-Canel had tweeted, “We reject this coup movement that aims to fill the country with violence.

“Cuba stands by the legitimate government of # Venezuela that is calmly and courageously facing the new coup attempt by the pro-imperialist right with the complicity of the # US and the lackey governments of the region.”
