Sloane Stephens and Jozy Altidore announce engagement

It’s a perfect match.

Tennis star Sloane Stephens and US soccer standout Jozy Altidore announced their engagement Monday on social media. The couple, who have been dating since 2016, made it official on Twitter with posts that included a photo of them celebrating, and read “Forever yes” with a heart and “Forever starts now.”

The 26-year-old Stephens is one of the faces of American tennis. She is ranked No. 8 in the WTA rankings, won the 2017 US Open and lost in the 2018 French Open final.

Altidore, 29, is in his fifth season with the MLS franchise Toronto FC, but is best known as a star of the US men’s national team. He has 110 caps and tallied 41 goals for the US since 2007. Alitdore signed an contract extension in February with Toronto that will keep him with the team until 2022.

The couple were childhood friends, according to a 2017 USA Today article.

“She is somebody who gets everything I am going through without having to say anything,” Altidore said in the story. “You look at each other and you kind of know right away if one of you is annoyed. She just kind of gets the mood I’m in, as obviously she lives a very similar kind of life.

“In that regard it works really well, there is no stress. She is a successful athlete and I do OK, and we just enjoy our time together when we are together.”
