Drama student tries to kill classmates while re-enacting ‘The Butterfly Effect’

A University of Hartford drama student allegedly tried to kill two of his classmates while re-enacting a scene from the 2004 flick “The Butterfly Effect.”

Jake Wascher and two other students were working on their group project in a dorm room at the Connecticut college on Sunday when Wascher, 20, allegedly took the assignment too far, stabbing his classmates before running away.

When Wascher was arrested, he told police he wasn’t acting and was just “curious what it would be like to stab someone,” the Hartford Courant reported.

Later, he told cops that he was too “into his character” and let his emotions get the best of him.

“I acted a little to [sic] hard,” he said, according to police.

Wascher was charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of first degree assault. He was held on $1 million bail at his arraignment Monday, after appearing before the court via video from Hartford Hospital.

Officials wouldn’t say why he was hospitalized.

The victims, who are 19 and 21, were stabbed multiple times and taken to a hospital. The 19-year-old is in critical condition after undergoing surgery for puncture wounds on his chest and back. The 21-year-old, who was stabbed in his chest and in his back four times, is in stable condition.

Police said the students were acting out a scene from 2004’s “The Butterfly Effect,” which starred Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart.
