Amtrak work train derails at Penn Station, delaying service

An Amtrak maintenance train derailed at Penn Station early Saturday — snarling traffic in and out of the massive transit hub.

The derailment occurred just before 7 a.m., and no crew members were injured.

Still, the mishap made riding the weekend rails hectic for NJ Transit commuters.

“MidTown Direct rail service is being diverted to Hoboken terminal due to an Amtrak work train derailment in Penn Station New York,” the agency tweeted. “Customers will transfer to PATH to continue their service to/from New York.”

“NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored by PATH at Newark, Hoboken and 33rd St,” they added. “NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes are being crossed honored by NJ Transit bus and private carriers.”

Meanwhile, the Long Island Rail Road tweeted that commuters could experience delays in and out of Penn Station — as the derailment might reduce track space available to the LIRR.

No Amtrak trains were delayed, and the equipment was close to being removed from the station by late morning, a spokeswoman said.
