Weird But True

Truck carrying 3,000 pigs overturns on Illinois highway

That’s hog wild!

A livestock hauler truck carrying nearly 3,000 small pigs overturned on an Illinois highway about an hour south of Chicago around 8 a.m. Friday — killing about 100 of them, according to state police and a new report.

A photo released by state police shows the surviving pigs frolicking in the mud next to the vehicle, toppled on its side.

The crash occurred because the driver had fallen ill, The Tribune-Star reported. He was cited for improper lane usage.

The surviving pigs were captured and continued to their destination in Indiana, according to the report. No one was injured in the accident, but authorities warned drivers that they should remain vigilant. Clean-up continued on scene Friday afternoon.

“A traffic crash has set nearly 3,000 piglets are loose for an apparent refreshing mud bath near milepost 127 (2 miles west of Casey),” state police tweeted. “Troopers are on scene assisting with corralling the spa goers!”

Later, State Police thanked two local police departments, the fire department, the department of transportation and other agencies for their “teamwork” in corralling the piglets.

“Here’s Trooper Jenkins hamming it up with a customer this morning!” the agency wrote on Facebook, accompanied by a photo of a female trooper carrying a small white pig. Another man followed behind, carrying one tiny piglet in each arm.
