Airlines saw a spike in passenger deaths in 2018: study

New data confirms that 2018 saw a spike in plane crashes compared to 2017.

The International Air Transport Association released its annual airline safety performance review and found that in 2018, there were 62 plane accidents, up from 46 in 2017. Meanwhile, the number of fatal accidents increased from six in 2017 to 11 the following year.

And when it came to passenger deaths, 523 people died in 2018 — up from 19 the year before.

But before you cancel your spring break plans, the association points out that planes are still the safest way to travel. According to the report, you’d need to fly every day for 241 years in order to be at risk for an air accident.

“If safety in 2018 had remained at the same level as 2013, there would have been 109 accidents instead of 62; and there would have been 18 fatal accidents, instead of the 11 that actually occurred,” Alexandre de Juniac, the association’s CEO, wrote in a press release.
