Inmate falls through jail ceiling during escape attempt

An Indiana jailbird’s escape bid went horribly wrong when he tumbled through a ceiling — and fell straight into the booking area, new video shows.

Jackson County Jail officers were taking 28-year-old Blaze Ayers to his holding cell from the outdoor recreation area Monday when the inmate ran into a medical room within the booking area and locked the door behind him, the local sheriff’s office said in a press release.

Officers went through an adjacent room to find him — but by the time they entered the medical room, Ayers had made his way into the ceiling, police said.

Deputies demanded that Ayers come down, but he refused and continued to crawl through the ceiling in an ill-fated attempt to escape the jail, cops said.

Ayers ultimately caused so much damage to the ceiling that it gave way, sending him toppling to the floor, tangled in wires, as four officers surrounded him.

Even after his doomed escape bid, he still refused to comply with orders from police, who needed to subdue him with a Taser, authorities said.

Ayers was treated for minor injuries and charged with attempted escape, a level 5 felony, and criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor, cops said.

The cost to repair the ceiling was not immediately known.

Ayers was first booked into jail on Christmas Eve for allegedly failing to appear in court on a battery charge, local stations reported.
