Jets jump at chance for Dolphins’ coaching castoff

The Jets are looking within their division for their next head-coaching candidate.

Former Dolphins coach Adam Gase is scheduled to interview with the team on Friday, according to a source.

Gase was fired Monday after three seasons in Miami. He went 23-25 in the regular season there and guided the Dolphins to a playoff appearance in 2016.

Gase, 40, is an offensive mind, something the Jets are hoping to land to help develop quarterback Sam Darnold. He was the offensive coordinator for the Bears in 2015 and Broncos in 2013-14 before going to Miami. In Denver, he oversaw a record-setting offense with Peyton Manning at quarterback.

The biggest question for Gase is what happened in Miami. There have been reports of players disliking him and believing he favored quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Gase was also charged with developing Tannehill, which never quite happened, but the quarterback could not stay healthy, so that may not be pinned on Gase completely.

The Jets have hired first-time head coaches in each of their past five hires, so Gase would be a departure there.
