The Long Island boy who jumped out of a window to escape a deadly house fire was beside himself when he ran for help, a neighbor recalled Monday.
The 10-year-old suffered a broken arm and burns after leaping out of the second-floor window of the New Hyde Park home on North 12th Street when flames erupted at around 3 a.m. Sunday. He ran across the street to Shaju Sam’s home for help.
“He was crying and telling me what happened that his house was on fire and his parents weren’t here,” Sam told The Post.
Sam said he sprang into action, alerting his neighbors to the raging inferno on the quiet block.
“Everyone is sleeping at 3 o’clock,” he said. “They needed to know just in case.”
The blaze left a 68-year-old woman and her 4-year-old granddaughter dead.
The boy’s fall was broken when he landed on a car in the driveway, which was eventually burned into a charred heap.
On Monday, the two-story home sat vacant with its windows, front door and garage boarded up and black scorch marks covering its brick front.
Two other people who were at the home at the time escaped without injuries.
Fire officials are still investigating the cause. They have not identified the victims.
The Nassau County home did not have working smoke detectors, fire officials told ABC 7.
They said the fire was so intense, it had blown out the doors and windows by the time firefighters arrived.
