NFL fines Mayfield — just not for staring down Hue Jackson

The NFL is making Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield pay for his inappropriate conduct just not for any toward his former coach, Hue Jackson.

Mayfield was fined $10,026 on Saturday for a lewd gesture during a touchdown celebration on the sideline directed at Browns offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens during Cleveland’s victory over the Bengals on Dec. 23, according to reports.

The QB gestured toward his groin area near the sideline after throwing a 1-yard touchdown pass to Darren Fells in the second quarter of the 26-18 win.

The rookie told reporters this past week that he did not remember the details of what happened.

“I don’t know,” Mayfield said. “We have a lot of stuff within the locker room, what we have going on in the offense. Lot of inside jokes. Who knows what it was?”

The incident involving Jackson happened later in the game. Mayfield stared down the Bengals special assistant and former Browns coach after he completed a 66-yard pass to David Njoku on the game’s final drive, helping seal the victory.
