Hall of Fame basketball coach Larry Brown has been fired by the Italian club Fiat Torino, the team announced Thursday.
Brown, 78, compiled a 5-19 record in his first season with the Serie A team and was reportedly booed at home after Wednesday’s 96-79 loss to Sidigas Avellino.
Brown, inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012, is the only coach to win championships in the NCAA (Kansas Jayhawks in 1988) and the NBA (Detroit Pistons in 2004).
In addition to Kansas (1983-88), he also coached in the college ranks at UCLA (1979-81) and SMU (2012-16).
Brown’s pro coaching resume includes stints with the ABA’s Carolina Cougars (1972-74) and the NBA’s Denver Nuggets (1974-79), New Jersey Nets (1981-83), San Antonio Spurs (1988-92), Los Angeles Clippers (1992-93), Indiana Pacers (1993-97), Philadelphia 76ers (1997-2003), Pistons (2003-05), Knicks (2005-06) and Charlotte Bobcats (2008-10).
Assistant coach Paolo Galbiati was named as Brown’s replacement for Torino’s final eight games.
