Trump admin scraps Obama-era rule on punishment for violent students

The Trump administration has scrapped an ill-conceived Obama-era rule that handcuffed schools when punishing violent offenders — a welcome change for bullied students and beaten teachers.

The move on Friday by the Education and Justice departments allows schools to respond with suspensions and expulsions regardless of race.

Administrators had hesitated to take action due to an anti-discrimination rule in 2014, which many argued had the unintended result of making schools less safe.

Education secretary Betsy DeVos said that “discipline is a matter on which classroom teachers and local school leaders deserve and need autonomy.”

The change comes after three years of coverage in The Post highlighting the issue.
