It looks like Andrew Miller could be the next free-agent target for the Mets and Yankees to miss out on.
Miller reportedly is close to a deal with the Cardinals, according to The Athletic.
The former Yankee was a key piece of the Indians’ run to the World Series in 2016 and has been sought as lefty relief help by a number of hopeful contenders, but he is coming off an injury-plagued 2018 campaign that was also one of his worst statistical years.
As hamstring and knee issues limited Miller to just 34 innings in 2018, he posted a 4.24 ERA and a 46-16 strikeout-to-walk rate.
Last season’s difficulties notwithstanding, Miller is a two-time All-Star who has pitched to a 2.21 ERA since becoming a full-time reliever in 2012, and his presence at the back end of a bullpen would likely boost any team’s postseason hopes.
That was one of the main reasons the Yankees were considering a reunion and the Mets, who need lefty relief help, were thinking of trying to lure him to Queens.
It appears, however, the Cardinals are going to make any such plans moot.
