NYPD vet appointed to Medal of Valor Review Board

A former NYPD chief will help recognize the nation’s most distinguished first-responders as the newest member of the Public Service Officer’s Medal of Valor Review Board, officials announced Friday.

US Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) on Friday appointed former Police Department Transit Chief Joe Fox, who retired from the NYPD at the beginning of 2018 after 37 years on the job.

“Joe Fox has shown himself to be an outstanding law-enforcement professional, and his continued service to New York made him a clear choice for this position,” Schumer said in a statement.

As a member of the board, Fox will have a hand in deciding who will receive the prestigious medal, which is “awarded to public-safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life,” the statement said.

Last year’s Medal of Valor recipients included six sheriff’s deputies who fought and won a gun battle with suspects fleeing the 2015 San Bernardino terror attack.

Fox will select five Medal of Valor nominees for consideration by the 11-member board. The US Attorney General and the president award the medal in the name of Congress.

In the announcement, Schumer heralded Fox’s “steadfast dedication to the professional administration of justice and close ties with the communities where he served.”

The former three-star chief rose up the ranks as a patrol commander of precincts in Brooklyn and Queens. He currently works in the private sector for the global security firm SilverSEAL.
