Melania Trump heads to Mar-a-Lago amid shutdown fears

The government shut down at midnight — but the “Winter White House” in open for business!

Melania Trump jetted to her family’s southern Florida estate of Mar-a-Lago on Friday evening as President Trump was busy “signing bills” in the Oval Office.

A spokesperson for the first lady said Melania and her 12-year-old son, Barron, left Washington, DC, to continue “the family’s longtime tradition” of spending Christmas “at their waterfront Mar-a-Lago estate.”

The president had originally planned to join his wife and son on the vacation. But the White House said Trump would stay in Washington if parts of the government are forced to shut down at midnight Friday.

Trump tweeted an image of himself in the Oval Office on Friday night sitting next to a large stack of “Some of the many Bills” he said he was signing.

“Cancelled my trip on Air Force One to Florida while we wait to see if the Democrats will help us to protect America’s Southern Border!” Trump wrote.

The president and congressional leaders are in a stalemate over his demand for $5 billion to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.
