Columbia University student leaps to his death

A Columbia University student leaped to his death in Upper Manhattan on Friday afternoon, authorities and witnesses said.

Niels Chardon-Boucaud, a 21-year-old masters student from France, jumped from a fifth-floor window of 548 Riverside Dr., a university-owned building, in Morningside Heights around 1:55 p.m., landing in a courtyard below, officials said.

The engineering student was rushed to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s hospital, but he could not be saved, officials said.

“We are in contact with his family to provide support and assistance during this time,” a Columbia University spokesman added.

The Riverside Drive building is not a dormitory but houses a number of graduate students, he said.
