Lawyer for Spitzer’s ex-mistress says he should be investigated

Svetlana Travis Zakharova’s salacious story comes as her lawyer asked Manhattan US Attorney Geoffrey Berman to launch a new investigation of former Gov. Elliot Spitzer.

In a letter delivered to Berman’s office Thursday, Queens lawyer Joseph Murray alleges Spitzer used his clout to turn a police investigation into Zakharova’s allegations of domestic violence against the ex-governor into a crusade against her.

Murray said he believes that the NYPD and Manhattan and Bronx DAs were “acquisitioned” to “find anything and everything they could to prosecute her with” — while cops “shielded” Spitzer.

He questioned why Spitzer was never arrested over her allegations, and why the case was “suddenly removed” from the Midtown North Detective Squad and reassigned to the “elite” Bronx Homicide Squad.

When Spitzer filed a short-lived lawsuit against Zakharova accusing her of extortion, Murray alleges that Spitzer privately confided to her that it was all “for show.”

“As a retired New York City police officer, I am saddened and, in fact, disgusted by all the political corruption that is increasingly taking place at the federal, state and local levels of our government,” Murray told The Post.

“In off-the-record conversations with cops, prosecutors and judges, the one thing that we all agree on is that if we were in Spitzer’s shoes, we would all be sitting in a cell right now. This is completely unacceptable to me.”

Spitzer’s attorney called the allegations “a waste of everyone’s time.” Both the Bronx DA and Berman’s office declined to comment.
