Weird But True

Video shows principal asking student to ‘hold his banana’

School officials have released video showing an Iowa principal — who came under fire over the summer for his creepy behavior — trying to coax a female student to “hold his banana” while he was dressed up as the fruit.

The footage shows Todd Dirth, of Fort Madison Middle School, interacting with students during a December 2017 assembly before he eventually targets the girl in question.

Local media outlets had been trying to get their hands on the video for months after first catching wind of the incident back when it happened.

Hearings were reportedly held, complaints filed and negotiations made before district officials finally agreed to make the footage public this week following one last public records request by the Pen City Current and Tri-States Public Radio station on Sept. 24.

The outlets posted a pair of clips online Wednesday, showing Dirth in his banana costume — asking the young girl to hold it. The portion of the costume that he asked her to clutch was between his legs.

Dirth was disciplined for the incident, but it’s unclear what his punishment was. He “continues to be a valued employee of the Fort Madison Community School District,” according to officials.
