Behold, New Jersey’s most expensive property: A mansion modeled off an English castle that’s back on the market for $48 million. The approximately 50,000-square-foot home, known as the Darlington Mansion, is in Mahwah, on more than 12 acres framed by the Ramapo Mountains.
The next most expensive property in the state is also in Mahwah, asking $29.5 million.
If Darlington Mansion seems a little, well, big for a single-family residence, entrepreneurs take note: it has just been rezoned to be repurposed as a corporate retreat. Built in 1901 and renovated over the last seven years to modernize it while preserving its original details, the estate is on the National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.
The home was built by George Crocker, the son of railroad mogul Charles Crocker. The architect was James Brite, who, with his partner Henry Bacon, created the original Madison Square Garden.
Original details include hand-carved woodwork, a great hall with a 30-foot-high ceiling and a 1906 player pipe organ, and a library with a 15-foot-high hand-painted ceiling. There’s also a full list of over-the-top amenities, including a tea room, a wine cellar with a tasting room, a cigar room, a beauty salon, a theater and a billiard room with a bar. If that’s not enough, there’s also a spa with a lap pool, a steam room and sauna, and massage and exercise rooms.
Outdoor space features a tennis court with a cabana, two fountains, two pergolas, a gazebo and a pool with a cabana.
