Accused synagogue gunman legally purchased arsenal of guns

Alleged Pittsburgh mass shooter Robert Bowers owned an arsenal of 10 guns — all purchased legally, investigators have concluded.

Using an AR-15-style rifle and three Glock .357 handguns on Saturday, the anti-Semite opened fire inside the Tree of Life Synagogue, killing 11 innocent people.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says the four weapons used in the attack — as well as a shotgun found in his car outside and two rifles and three handguns recovered at his home — were all “acquired and possessed legally by Bowers,” according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Bowers had no known previous crimes, mental health diagnoses or dishonorable discharges from the military that would have legally barred him from owning the weapons.

Pittsburgh passed a law in 1993 banning assault weapons such as the one Bowers used, but a subsequent state ordinance effectively repealed it, according to the Post-Gazette.
