Red Sox blow open Game 3 in stunning Yankees disaster

The rout is on.

A fourth-inning Andrew Benintendi double that cleared the bases, driving in three, turned Yankees-Red Sox Game 3 into a disaster for the home team in The Bronx on Monday night. Soon after, Brock Holt hit a two-RBI triple, and it was a stunning 10-0 Red Sox lead.

Aaron Boone may have stuck with Luis Severino too long, allowing the right-hander to load the bases in the inning before the Yankees turned to Lance Lynn. Lynn walked a batter before Benintendi delivered the blow. Suddenly, the Yankees looked on the way to a Game 4 with their season on the line.

The Red Sox had jumped out to a 3-0 lead, getting a run in the second inning and two in the third.

Three hits, a sacrifice fly and RBI fielder’s choice created the third-inning runs, the Red Sox going small-ball successfully. J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers knocked the runs in.

An inning earlier, they squeezed across a run, as Devers started the inning with a single off Severino, and a steal and a ground out advanced him to third with two outs. Christian Vazquez, part of Boston’s new-look lineup, then hit a liner up the middle that Severino had in his webbing, but couldn’t catch cleanly. It bounced away from him, and Vazquez reached on an infield single that scored Devers.

Offensively, the Yankees had done little through three innings, with Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres registering the only hits.
