President Trump on Thursday railed about the “uncorroborated allegations” against his Supreme Court nominee as a vote on Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation draws closer in the Senate.
“The harsh and unfair treatment of Judge Brett Kavanaugh is having an incredible upward impact on voters. The PEOPLE get it far better than the politicians,” he wrote on Twitter. “Most importantly, this great life cannot be ruined by mean & despicable Democrats and totally uncorroborated allegations!”
He returned to the his Twitter account about 90 minutes later to say this is “a very important time in our country.”
“Due Process, Fairness and Common Sense are now on trial!,” he wrote.
The defense of his nominee comes as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will call for a procedural vote on Kavanaugh on Friday that will lay the groundwork for a possible vote on his confirmation as soon as this weekend.
At the same time, Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said early Thursday that the panel had received a supplemental background check on Kavanaugh and senators could begin reviewing the files.
The investigation was prompted by accusations made by Christine Blasey Ford during a Judiciary Committee meeting last Thursday.
She claimed that a drunken Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, tried to remove her clothing and prevented her from calling for help during a high school party in 1982.
Kavanaugh has denied the charges.
