Tiger Woods paired with a villain in Ryder Cup return

The man treated like a hero this past week will pair with “Captain America” in Friday’s opening fourball Ryder Cup matches.

Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed will be the fourth and final matchup against the European squad of Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood.

Reed is expected to be a controversial figure this week in France, known for his fiery spirit at the Ryder Cup. Woods is coming off his first win in five years at The Tour Championship.

“That’s one thing I cherish when I come overseas is they know how to give jabs and take shots at you back and forth, and they do it in a respectful way,” Reed said this week. “It’s a place I’ve always loved to come and I’m still trying to come up with something that I get to do and kind of keep my years going for three in a row and see if I can get booed again.”

Woods, dealing with multiple back injuries, has not played in the past two Ryder Cups and has not excelled in the event. Woods’ individual career record is 13-17-3 and the US team has only won once (1999) in the seven times he’s played.

Here are all the morning matchups from Le Golf National:

Match 1: Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau (U.S.) v Justin Rose and Jon Rahm (Europe)

Match 2: Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler (U.S.) v Rory McIlroy and Thorbjorn Olesen (Europe)

Match 3: Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas (U.S.) v Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton (Europe)

Match 4: Patrick Reed and Tiger Woods (U.S.) v Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood (Europe)
