Marcus Maye’s injury situation isn’t getting better

It looks like the Jets may be without safety Marcus Maye for another week.

Maye did not practice on Monday as he still recovers from a foot injury. Jets coach Todd Bowles has not revealed the exact nature of Maye’s injury, but it is troubling that he is in line to miss another week.

Bowles did not officially rule out Maye for Thurday night’s game, but it seems unlikely he will be ready to play if he only practices Tuesday.

“It’s still too early to tell. He’s running better,” Bowles said. “We’ll take a look and see.”

Maye played in the Jets’ third preseason game against the Giants, which was nearly a month ago, but he has not practiced at all since the regular season began. Does he need to get some practices under his belt before playing?

“It all depends on how he comes back,” Bowles said. “He knows the defense very well so that will factor into it as well.”

WR ArDarius Stewart was back at practice Monday after serving his two-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. The Jets received an exemption from the NFL and do not have to make a roster move until Tuesday.

One of the biggest plays in Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins was the third-and-19 Miami converted on the game’s final drive to keep the ball from the Jets. The Jets blitzed on the play and Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill found Frank Gore on a short pass that he took 19 yards for the first down.

Why blitz and not just give up a short pass? Bowles said a short pass would have put Miami in field-goal range and the Dolphins could have stretched their lead from eight to 11 points to end the game.

“We just missed the pickup,” Bowles said of the failure to cover Gore. “We blitz when we see certain things. The blitz would have been fine if it had worked out. It didn’t work out.”

Bowles said TE Neal Sterling (concussion) is unlikely to play Thursday. … OLB Josh Martin (concussion) did not practice, but Bowles said he could play. … LT Kelvin Beachum and LB James Carpenter both were limited in practice with foot injuries.
