Man pleads guilty to beating toddler he was babysitting

PEKIN, Ill. — A central Illinois man faces up to 30 years in prison for beating his 18-month-old niece while babysitting her last summer.

Kahlus Adams pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated battery to a child causing great bodily harm. The attack left the child with a leg broken in half, a broken arm and a bleeding brain.

Prosecutors say the 21-year-old Adams attacked the toddler when she wouldn’t stop crying as he watched her and her siblings for their parents on Aug. 11, 2017. The child was hospitalized for several days with the injuries that also included facial abrasions and bruises.

While each aggravated battery count carries six to 30 years behind bars, Adams will serve the terms concurrently under a plea agreement. He is scheduled for sentencing Nov. 5, and must serve at least 85 percent of prison time.
