Christian Hackenberg joins fourth team in four months

Christian Hackenberg’s NFL-sponsored tour around the country continues.

From New York with the Jets until May 22 to Oakland to Philadelphia to Cincinnati. NFL Network reported Sunday the Bengals would add the former second-round quarterback to their practice squad. Bengals linebacker coach Jim Haslett may have vouched for him, as the former Saints head coach was a consultant for Penn State in 2015.

Philadelphia, as expected, cut Hackenberg Friday as they trimmed their roster and stuck with Carson Wentz, Nick Foles and Nate Sudfeld as their three quarterbacks. Hackenberg had signed with the Eagles in mid-August and played in their preseason finale, fittingly against the Jets, and did not perform well: 7-of-16 for 69 yards and two interceptions.

Before Philadelphia, Oakland had taken a chance on Hackenberg and cut him weeks later. The 51st-overall selection by the Jets in the 2016 draft has not panned out — never even playing in a regular-season game for the Jets — but now can try to prove himself with the Bengals.
