Family holds funeral for baby found dead in East River

The family of the 7-month-old baby found dead in the East River two weeks ago wept openly at his funeral at a Bronx church Monday.

The body of Mason Saldana — found by a tourist August 5th on an embankment of the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge wearing just a diaper — was in a small white casket adorned with a gold cross.

His transit worker father, James Currie, was arrested in connection to his death after he fled to Thailand and was extradited back to the US.

A formal complaint filed in court said Currie, 37, threatened the child’s frantic mother via text that she would never see her son again.

About 20 family members from the mother’s side attended the grim funeral at Our Lady of Solace Church.

A woman identified as Elizabeth, a maternal aunt of Mason, read tearfully from “The Book of Wisdom.”

“The souls of the just are in the hands of God and no torment shall touch them,” she said.

“In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster and their going from us to be their destruction, but they are at peace.”

The boy’s mother — dressed in white and wearing dark sunglasses — sobbed throughout the 45-minute service.

The parish priest, Father Nevins Peiris, said he “prayed for the soul of the baby” and urged the family somehow to find peace of mind.

“As Jesus forgave his enemies, I pray to God that he will give you strength, grace and wisdom to forgive your enemies,” the priest told the family.

After the service, the body was taken to Woodlawn Cemetery for burial.
