Fishing boat capsizes off Jersey Shore after being hit by whale

A fishing boat capsized off the New Jersey shore Thursday after it was hit by a whale, police said.

Two people aboard the 20-foot vessel were tossed into waters one mile off Deal, NJ, in the collision with the sea creature, but were rescued and were not injured, authorities said.

State police even had some fun with the incident, posting a recap on Facebook: “Final Score: Whale 1 – Boat 0.”

“And suddenly the great beast was before them! He was ten stories high if he was a foot!” state police wrote, paraphrasing a script from the iconic NBC sitcom “Seinfeld.”

Troopers from the New Jersey State Marine Services Bureau are conducting an accident investigation.

“Charges against the whale are pending its apprehension,” the state police yucked.

Retired Trenton firefighter Capt. Gary Szabo told NJ.com that he was out on the water fishing for fluke and rushed to the scene after hearing on the radio that a whale had flipped a boat and caused a “mayday” call.

“It caught my ear,” Szabo said.

One of the rescued fishermen said they saw the whale come toward their boat.

“We watched the whale, we watched the whale and the next thing I know all of a sudden the boat just goes whee and it’s gone,” one of the fishermen said.
