At least 1 dead after gunman opens fire at Mormon church

A man walked into a Mormon church in Nevada Sunday and opened fire, killing one person and wounding another, according to reports.

John Kelley O’Connor, 48, started blasting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Fallon, Nev., during a service at 1 p.m. that was attended by some 50 people, KOLO-TV reported.

He then left the building and walked home, according to Fox News.

Cops later called his house and asked him to surrender, which he did, according to reports.

“It’s really too early to understand the motive,” Fallon Police Chief Kevin Gehman said, according to KOLO.

The wounded person suffered a leg injury.

“Our hearts go out to family members of those who have lost someone and those who were in the church today where the tragedy occurred,” Fallon Mayor Ken Tedford said, according to KOLO.

“Deeply saddened by the act of senseless violence in Fallon today at the LDS church,” Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nevada) tweeted. “We are in contact with Mayor Tedford and other officials. My family and I are praying for all loved ones, churchgoers, and community members impacted by this tragedy.”
