It seems only fitting Darrelle Revis will officially end his career where it began: as a Jet. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots, which will never sit quite right with most Jets fans, but he’ll be forever their own, a homegrown draft pick, who will likely end up in the Hall of Fame.
The Jets will host a retirement press conference for Revis on Tuesday at their Atlantic Health Training Center, offering the first-round draft pick in 2007 a chance to take a bow on his brilliant 11-year career.
There are no immediate plans to retire Revis’ No. 24 jersey, something that is sure to come during a regular season game when ticket sales can be maximized. Tuesday’s press conference is being called a welcome “into their Legends Community,” in which he technically had membership after the first game he played.
Revis will be known more for his first tenure with the Jets than the second — those years from 2007 to 2012 when he was the league’s best shutdown cornerback and worth the price of admission.
Then he got hurt and went to the Buccaneers then the Patriots before coming back to the Jets in 2015. He had five interceptions that year and made his seventh Pro Bowl. But Father Time was closing fast, and somewhere during the 2016 season, Revis was done. A cameo with the Chiefs last year only validated the fact it was time to retire. He’ll do that officially as a Jet on Tuesday.
