Two people bitten in shark attacks off Fire Island

Two young beachgoers were bitten in shark attacks off two Fire Island beaches Wednesday, according to officials and reports.

The chilling attacks happened within minutes of each other off Sailors Haven and Atlantique Beach — about 4½ miles apart — around 11:30 a.m., said Suffolk County police.

In the second attack, a shark bit a 13-year-old boy on the leg in the waters off Atlantique Beach, according to a spokesman for the Town of Islip.

Responders found a tooth lodged in the teen’s leg, and are analyzing it to try to determine the species of the shark responsible, according to NBC New York.

The boy walked onto a police boat under his own power, and was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, officials said.

Initial details about the first attack off Sailors Haven in Brookhaven were more scarce, but Fox 5 New York reported that the other victim was a 12-year-old girl.

A woman on Facebook said her daughter was one of the victims.

“One of the TWO [attacks] that happened this past hour is our Lola!” Barbara Pollina captioned a photo of her daughter, her lower right leg heavily bandaged.

The youth seemed to be in good spirits, smiling and flashing an “OK” sign in the picture.

Both victims are expected to survive, Suffolk County police said.

Ocean beaches along the island reportedly were closed in the wake of the attacks.
