Middle school counselor allegedly wanted to leave husband for teen lover

A Texas middle school counselor accused of having sex with a male student allegedly wanted to leave her husband for the teen, according to officials.

Shannon Hathaway, a Harwood Junior High School counselor, was dumped though by the ninth-grade student after his mother allegedly caught them naked in his bedroom, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Hathaway, 33, was arrested Thursday in Bedford on charges of improper relationship between an educator and a student.

Bedford Police said the counselor allegedly had sex with him on numerous occasions during the previous school year when he was 17 years old.

The encounters reportedly occurred at her home in Keller and his mother’s residence in Euless.

School officials learned about the allegations in May when the student’s sister came forward about the relationship, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

The sister told police that the counselor claimed she was in love with the teen boy. Hathaway also reportedly confided in the sister that she would leave her husband for him, police said.

Hathaway was placed on paid leave following the misconduct claims and later resigned from her position.

She turned herself in to authorities Thursday after a warrant was issued for her arrest.

The school district notified parents Thursday in an automated call.

“There is no evidence to suggest the alleged behavior happened on the Harwood Junior High campus,” Superintendent Steve Chapman said.
