Weird But True

Reeking passenger caused vomiting, fainting and emergency landing

A Dutch airliner was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger’s overpowering body odor caused others to vomit and faint, according to a report.

The Transavia Boeing 737 took off Tuesday night from Amsterdam for the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, but the fetid flier unleashed an overpowering stench that made his fellow passengers gag, the UK’s Mirror reported.

At first, flight attendants tried to quarantine the foul-smelling man in a lavatory, but the pilots eventually had to divert to Faro in southern Portugal so he could be removed.

The low-cost airline cited “medical reasons” for the emergency landing – but it was unclear if they referred to the offensive passenger or those who were overcome by his smell.

“The aeroplane diverted because of medical reasons, but it is indeed right that he smelled quite a bit,” a Transavia spokesman said.

Belgian passenger Piet van Haut described the mile-high stink as “unbearable.”

“It was like he hadn’t washed himself for several weeks. Several passengers got sick and had to puke,” he said.

The gross-out episode was not the first to hit the airline this year.

In February, a Transavia plane en route from Dubai to Amsterdam was forced to land in the Austrian capital of Vienna after a passenger could not stop farting.

The incident sparked a brawl among several passengers.
