Arsonist caught on video lighting home on fire, trapping residents

A deranged firebug could be seen on video torching a home in Brooklyn before running away from the flaming inferno as residents were left trapped inside.

Sean Figaro, 37, allegedly doused the three-story building in Canarsie with a flammable liquid and then ignited the blaze at around 2 a.m. Monday — trapping 16 people inside, according to FDNY officials.

The suspect — who could also be seen filling up red canisters on surveillance footage from a nearby gas station — recently moved out of the residence after an argument with other tenants, officials said.

He could be seen fleeing the scene the moment that the front of the home burst into flames.

Firefighters were able to remove 16 people from the home, who suffered just minor injuries.

Figaro was arrested and charged with 16 counts of attempted murder, one count of arson, two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of criminal mischief.

“Setting a fire at the entrance of home, in the dead of night, trapping 16 people, is a heinous act which could have easily resulted in a major loss of life if not for the rapid response and outstanding efforts of our Fire and EMS personnel,” Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said on Thursday.

“Thanks to a thorough investigation by our Fire Marshals, a dangerous individual whose callous actions nearly took many lives has quickly been apprehended.”
