Mets manager benches Jose Reyes and tries to lift his spirits

After Jose Reyes made two errors at third base on Tuesday, Mets manager Mickey Callaway went with Luis Guillorme in Frazier’s spot on Wednesday. Callaway said he spoke to Reyes following Tuesday’s game, when one of his miscues led to a pair of unearned runs against Zack Wheeler.

“No matter the age or how long you’ve been playing, people need words of encouragement,’’ Callaway said before the Mets’ 2-1 loss to the Marlins Wednesday night at Citi Field. “We’re trying to pick up everybody every day, trying to help them be better each day. He definitely needs it.”

Guillorme went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Callaway said he expects to give Amed Rosario a day off in the next couple of days. The Mets don’t have another off day on the schedule until June 4, and also have a double-header in Atlanta on Monday.

Rosario has been caught stealing four times in five attempts this season after being successful seven times in 10 tries last year. He was pegged again in the fifth after leading off with an infield single. He also swiped 19 with Triple-A Las Vegas last season.

The Mets don’t appear to be interested in former Yankee Phil Hughes, who was designated for assignment by the Twins. Like Matt Harvey, the right-hander hasn’t been the same since undergoing surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome.

Kevin Plawecki (fractured left hand) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday and homered. Hansel Robles (sprained right knee) was also scheduled to start a rehab stint with Vegas.
