Barbara Underwood to remain attorney general until election

The state legislature planned to name Barbara Underwood as the first woman attorney general of New York in a rare joint legislative session Tuesday, just weeks after Eric Schneiderman resigned in disgrace over reports that he abused four women.

Underwood, who has served as solicitor general since Gov. Andrew Cuomo ran the attorney general’s office more than a decade ago, will fill the role until a permanent replacement is sworn in next year following November’s election.

Underwood has said she will not run in the fall.

A dozen others submitted resumes and were interviewed for the interim appointment.

Numerous candidates have already lined up for the full-time position, including Public Advocate Letitia James, former gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout and Leecia Eve, a former top aide to Hillary Clinton and Cuomo.

The announced contenders on the GOP side are corporate lawyers Manny Alicandro and Keith Wofford.

State Democrats and Republicans will choose their nominees at separate conventions this week.
