Public Advocate Letitia James has filed papers with the state Board of Elections declaring her intention to run for attorney general in the fall.
The news comes days after she withdrew her name from consideration for appointment as interim AG to temporarily replace Eric Schneiderman — who resigned in disgrace amid allegations he physically abused four women.
Solicitor General Barbara Underwood became acting AG when Schneiderman resigned last week.
But the legislature has the power to name an interim AG and on Tuesday was interviewing potential candidates — including Underwood — who would serve through the end of the year.
James, an attorney with a degree from Howard University, is expected to face a crowded Democratic field in the Sept. 13 primary.
But she won’t have to contend with Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-LI), who announced Tuesday she would be running for re-election instead.
“I am excited to seek a third term in Congress and hope to continue representing my constituents in Washington at this critical moment in our nation’s history,” Rice said in a statement.
