Egypt’s top religious leader issues fatwa against buying Facebook ‘likes’

Buying “likes” on Facebook was banned this week by Egypt’s top mufti, who said the practice is a form of fraud and deceit.

The Islamic leader, Grand Mufti Shawki Allam, regularly issues religious decrees — called fatwas — usually in response to questions by Muslims looking for guidance.

In a post on Facebook earlier this week, the mufti wrote that it is “religiously prohibited” to pay someone to click “like” on an ad or promotion — because of how “deceptive” it is.

He quoted Muhammad’s saying: “He who deceives is not one of us.”
