If Giancarlo Stanton ever hits another home run, Yankees play-by-player John Sterling is ready to unveil a new signature call for last year’s NL MVP.
Sterling told The Post he will sing, saying, “Non dimenticar … that ball sure traveled far.” The line, in Italian, is from a Dean Martin/Nat King Cole song. Non dimenticar means, “Do not forget.”
Though Sterling is ready to unveil a new call, he is not giving up on the original that received so much attention after Stanton went deep twice on Opening Day. Sterling exclaimed, “Giancarlo, non si può de stoparlo! It is a Stantonian home run.” Sterling also had a second, slightly different saying in which he said, “fermarlo” at the end instead of “stoparlo.”
Sterling usually doesn’t take suggestions for his home run calls, but Bergen Record Yankees beat writer Pete Caldera mentioned the “Non Dimenticar” to Sterling and Suzyn Waldman, who both loved it. When Caldera is not covering Yankees games, he sings Sinatra at the Carnegie Club in Manhattan.
Stanton has only hit one homer since Opening Day, while striking out a league-worst 20 times in 42 at-bats.
