Ex-Pro Bowler shook off tasing, tackled cop in scary arrest

All 6-foot-5, 325 pounds of Branden Albert was angry after police turned a Taser on him.

The longtime left tackle, who hasn’t played since 2016 and is a free agent, was arrested Wednesday in Atlanta, according to online records, after an incident in a jewelry store that turned violent.

According to the incident report obtained by USA Today, the 33-year-old walked to the back of the store, which was restricted, and was asked by the store’s owner to leave. He then punched a hole in a store cabinet and was confronted by police.

Albert, flanked by two friends who agreed to pay for the damage, said he would not leave. According to the police report, he threatened to kill the store’s owner, then attempted to leave the scene against an officer’s order.

A policeman shot him with his Taser, the report said, which brought Albert to the ground, where he pulled out the prongs. Albert then took off running and tackled the officer when the cop caught up to him. Additional police arrived to restrain Albert, who was brought to Fulton County Jail on a charge of willful obstruction of law enforcement by use of threats or violence and second-degree criminal damage to property. As of Friday morning, internet records indicated he was still being held by police.

Albert was a mainstay with Kansas City from 2008 to 2013, when the former first-round pick played in 85 games. The Rochester native then signed with Miami and was a 2015 Pro Bowler. He was traded to Jacksonville in 2016 but soon retired, then unretired. The Jaguars ultimately released him.
