De Blasio taps Miami schools chief as next DOE chancellor

Mayor Bill de Blasio has tapped Miami schools chief Alberto Carvalho as his next Department of Education chancellor, DOE sources said Wednesday.

Carvalho is expected to officially replace current chancellor Carmen Farina in the coming weeks as she enters retirement.

De Blasio landed a renowned educator with a national profile to navigate the country’s largest school system — and budget — for the remainder of his term.

Carvalho, who grew up poor in Portugal before moving to the United States as an undocumented teen, has served as Miami Dade-County superintendent since 2008.

A recipient of several high-profile education awards, Carvalho has notably expanded the number of charter schools in Miami.

Carvalho began his career in education as a physics teacher before rising through the administrative ranks to his current post.
